Vegetable Garden Basics

There's a lot more to gardening than simply planting seeds, watering them, and watching vegetables grow. From where to plant seeds, which seeds to plant in the first place, and how to keep the vegetable plants alive, here's what you need to know about vegetable gardening for beginners.

Find the best spot for your garden

They say that location is everything, and they're right. When planning your vegetable garden, it's important to be intentional about where you plan to plant the seeds. For instance, if you placed your garden in a shady part of your yard but the vegetables you're going to grow need a lot of direct sunlight, then your garden will be set up to fail from the start. Knowing the required growing conditions for the vegetables you're going to plant is key.

Select a plot size that you can manage

You might have visions of a garden as far as the eye can see. While you should always dream big, make sure you start small when planting your first garden. You can always expand your garden as time goes on, but if you begin with a massive plot size, you might overwhelm yourself.

Decide which vegetables you will plant

Have you thought about which vegetables you want to plant in your garden? This is an important step, so make sure you give yourself time to consider the types of vegetables you not only want to grow but have the means to grow as well. When thinking about the vegetables that you will plant in your garden, it is important to consider which vegetables grow best in your area.

The climate will have a significant impact on how well your vegetables grow and whether or not they thrive in your garden. As such, when researching the vegetables you're thinking about growing, look into whether or not they do well where you live.

Figure out the arrangement of your garden

As important as it is to make sure the vegetables you’re going to plant will do well in your area, it’s also vital that you arrange your garden in a way that gives all of the vegetables enough space to grow. Some vegetables take up more room than others. For instance, while carrots grow underground, cucumbers grow above ground. Setting your garden up accordingly will ensure that both the below-ground and above-ground vegetables have adequate room to grow.

Gardening as a beginner

As a beginner, you might have a lot of questions about how to garden like a pro. Don’t be afraid to ask them. Everyone starts somewhere, and the more you learn, the more you will grow alongside your garden full of vegetables.
